For the Love of Red White & Blue!

It is not too early to start to think about this up coming Memorial Day Weekend, and how to decorate in celebration of the Red White & Blue!  Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nations service.

And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
~Lee Greenwood

Many people choose to hold picnics, sporting events and family gatherings on this weekend, as it is usually seen as the start of the summer season. For the fashion conscious, it is seen the day on which it is acceptable to wear white clothing.

I love red, white and blue decor, and tend to use it in my home year round, not just seasonally. Americana is always in! Finding red white & blue decor to celebrate this spirited weekend has never been easier. Here’s some red, white and blue inspiration for your home, table and party in honor of Memorial Day…and some special sweet treats for dessert!

And don’t forget dessert!!

Turn Your Lights On

It used to be that chandeliers were meant only for the dining room, but today, they can work in just about every room in your house. It is important when picking a chandelier to focus not only on style, but functionality as well. Will it provide the wattage you need? Is it to scale with your room? It is my experience that working with a lighting professional is the best way to go to ensure that you’re fixture will be size appropriate, and properly installed. Lighting is an incredibly important, and often overlooked component of furnishing a room. A great way to update your space is to remove that outdated fixture, and bring in a new chandelier. Here’s a few pictures of nautical chandelier inspiration:

Sea Inspired Table Settings

No matter what size dinner you are hosting, you can easily incorporate a nautical, coastal or sea life inspired theme into your table setting. From centerpieces, to dishes, to napkins, to serving-ware and glasses, there are so many ways to take your table from drab to fab. What’s great about a sea inspired theme, is that it’s timeless, and can be used at any sort of event from a backyard barbecue or clambake, to a formal sit down dinner. If you can’t be on the beach for dinner, you can definitely bring the beach to you!

Going to a florist and having a custom centerpiece made for you is always an option, but can be expensive, and require preordering. I like using natural elements around the table. One quick and easy centerpiece idea is to use glass vases and candles.

You can fill these vases with anything you have lying around. Think seashells, starfish, sand, driftwood, sisal rope, rocks, sea glass…use your imagination. You can also take existing glass or plastic vases and make DIY nautical rustic sisal rope centerpieces, as seen on the blog Ruffled.

Napkins are also a fun way to bring color and carry your theme through to the table. If your event is casual, go with a disposable printed napkin, if it’s more formal, go with a linen napkin. When it comes to dinnerware, I love dishes that are embellished with some sort of sea inspired them, without distracting from the food on the plate.

I’ve found that there is a wide variety of sea inspired plates and platters available right now. While some are ceramic, others are melanine, which is perfect for backyard barbecues. Here’s some table inspiration for you all, and links to some great accessories you will need to turn your dining table into a beautiful sea inspired gathering place for you , your family and friends! Fabulous Friday: Nautical Bedding!

A great way to completely change the look of a bedroom, without having to redo paint color, rugs and window treatments, is to update your bedding. A new duvet, comforter or sheet set can bring color, print, and character to an otherwise dull room in need of a makeover.

Something I like to do in a lot of the bedrooms I’ve worked on, is pick a solid, versatile duvet cover or comforter, and mix and match seasonally with an assortment of printed sheets and decorative pillows.

Of course, my favorite bedding collections are nautical or coastal in nature, and this spring/summer season, I’ve seen a lot of bedding collections online that I really love.

Here are a few of my favorite bedding collections of the season. I hope you like them and will feel inspired to transform your bedroom, kids room, or guest room with a great saltwater living inspired bedding set.
